A working holiday in Scotland swaps London's rush for castles, lochs and mountains, and live-in jobs mean you can save while you're there. Scottish hotels and bars hire working holiday makers every summer, with staff housing included and often meals too. Here's where the jobs are, when to go, what it costs and how to apply.

Do you need a different visa for Scotland?

No. The UK Youth Mobility Scheme visa covers the whole UK, Scotland included. Australians, New Zealanders and Canadians aged 18–35 can work in Scotland for up to 2 years, and extend for a third, on the same visa as London. Read our UK working holiday visa guide for how to apply.

Where the jobs are

Our Scottish employers are mostly on the west coast and in the Highlands, with one country house hotel near Edinburgh.

Most roles are full time, with interviews on Zoom before you fly.

When to go

The Scottish season runs from April to September. That's when most hotels are busiest and hiring, and when the long summer days make the Highlands at their best. A few roles run over winter, but not every hotel stays open, so spots are limited.

If you want a summer job in Scotland, apply in the months before spring. Live-in roles fill up, and you need time for your visa too.

Housing, meals and pay

Staff housing is the big win in Scotland. Depending on the employer, you'll get:

  • A private room within walking distance of the hotel for about £34–£35 a week, with bills included
  • A free shared dorm on site at the Fort William bar, with a shared bathroom, kitchen and laundry
  • Free meals on and off duty at the castle hotel, and staff meals or discounts at most others

Every job must pay at least the UK minimum wage: £12.71 an hour if you're 21 or over and £10.85 if you're 18 to 20, from April 2026. Tips are often added on top. With low rent and food covered, a summer in Scotland is one of the easiest ways to save for travel.

Do you need experience?

It depends on the role. The Fort William bar and some hotel roles are entry level, with training provided. The five-star and luxury hotels prefer people with hospitality or housekeeping experience, as these jobs are in high demand and come with strict dress codes.

No hotel experience yet? Start on Jumpstart London and work hotel and event shifts in central London first. That experience can count when you apply for a Scottish hotel role later.

Life on your days off

Living in the Highlands means the outdoors is on your doorstep. Depending on where you're based, you can:

  • walk Highland trails and coastal paths
  • go sea kayaking, sea fishing or river fishing for salmon and trout
  • mountain bike, play golf or try a falconry experience
  • explore lochs, islands and castles on your days off

The hotels are mostly remote, so a Scottish job suits nature lovers more than people chasing nightlife. Edinburgh and Glasgow are a train or bus ride away for weekends in the city.

Moving with a friend or partner

Friends and couples can apply together, and we'll do our best to place you side by side. Hiring decisions sit with each employer, though, so the more flexible you are on roles and locations, the better your chances of working together.

How to apply

  1. Book a consultation call to talk through roles, locations and commitment periods.
  2. Send your application with your CV, a photo and your available start date.
  3. Interview on Zoom with the employer's HR team before you fly.
  4. Get your contract, with your location, role, start date and pay.
  5. Land in London first. Set up your bank account, SIM and NI number with our London team, then travel to your job in Scotland.

FAQ

Do I need a separate visa to work in Scotland?

No. The UK Youth Mobility visa covers England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Australians, New Zealanders and Canadians aged 18–35 can work in Scotland on the same visa as anywhere else in the UK.

When is the best time to work in Scotland?

April to September. That's the main season, when most hotels are open and hiring. Winter roles exist, but there are fewer of them because not every hotel stays open.

Can I work in Scotland with no experience?

Yes, in some roles. The Fort William bar and some hotel roles are entry level with training. Five-star hotels usually prefer hospitality experience, which you can build first on Jumpstart London.
