Landing in London with no work lined up is the most stressful way to start a working holiday. The good news: you can set up a job in the UK before you leave home, as long as you know which employers hire from overseas and which ones want to meet you first. Here's how to line up work before you fly, and what to have ready so you can start in your first week."
Why most UK employers hire after you land
The UK working holiday visa doesn't need a job offer, and most UK employers don't make one until you're in the country. There are three reasons:
- They hire for immediate starts. Hospitality and events employers fill shifts week to week, not months ahead.
- They have to check your right to work before your first shift, which you can only prove once your visa is granted.
- They want to meet you. Many hotels and restaurants prefer a face-to-face interview or a trial shift.
So the goal isn't a signed contract before you fly. It's having employers ready to take you on the week you arrive.
Jobs you can line up before you fly
Live-in pub jobs
Live-in pub jobs interview by Zoom before you leave, so you can arrive with a job and a bed in staff housing. Our pub partner has venues across London plus Bath, Edinburgh and Newquay. You'll need to commit to at least 4 months, and because weekly places are capped, it's worth applying around 6 months ahead. See live-in pub jobs.
Live-in hotel and bar jobs in Scotland
Our Scottish employers run Zoom interviews with their HR teams before you fly, mostly for the April to September season. Hotel roles usually need hospitality experience. See Live Work Play Scotland.
Live-in hotel jobs in England and the Channel Islands
Country house hotels mostly hire people who are already in the UK, for immediate starts. If you have solid hotel experience, a pre-departure interview can be arranged case by case. See live-in hotel jobs.
Job introductions in London
With Jumpstart London, we introduce you to London hospitality, events and labouring employers before you fly. You register with them soon after you land, do their induction and start picking shifts. Roles depend on availability and the employer's right-to-work checks.
Make your CV UK-ready
UK employers expect a different CV from what you might use at home. Before you apply:
- Keep it to two pages.
- Leave out your photo, date of birth and marital status. UK employers don't expect them.
- Put your right to work at the top, for example "UK Youth Mobility visa, full right to work until [date]".
- Add a UK mobile number as soon as you have one, or a WhatsApp number before then.
- Lead with hospitality experience, and list any responsible service of alcohol or food safety certificates. The UK doesn't require them for bar staff, but they show experience.
- Give two referees who can reply by email, as UK time zones make phone references hard.
What to have ready for your first week
Employers can't put you on a shift until the basics are done, so get these sorted straight away:
- Your eVisa and share code. Sign in to your UK Visas and Immigration account and create a share code for employers' right-to-work checks.
- A National Insurance number. Apply online once you're in the UK. You can start work while you wait for it.
- A UK bank account so you can be paid.
- A UK SIM so employers can call you about shifts.
- Black work clothes. Event and hospitality jobs usually need black trousers and black non-slip shoes.
Our first-week checklist walks through each step.
Finding more work once you're in London
Your first job doesn't have to be your only one. Once you're settled, you can:
- Check the TWHC job board at My Space, which lists current UK vacancies from our employer partners
- Register with temp agencies for admin, reception and office work
- Search job sites such as Indeed for café, restaurant and bar roles
- Ask our London team to set up interviews for admin, barista and other roles in our network
The flexible shifts you start with have no minimum hours, so you can keep them going while you interview for something more permanent. See what jobs you can get in London for the roles and pay.
